My Self-Summary

A self-summary, huh? Alright.

Hey there! Rokurou Rangetsu, at your service. Twenty-two, swordsman, daemon, yaksha. I spend most of my time... or spent, I should say, with the Lord of Calamity back in the Holy Empire. Here, I've been spending my time in the "gym" and keeping up on my training. Most of what can be found in this resort is new to me.

Let's see... I had a five hundred year prison sentence but broke out after only three years, so I'm not doing that anymore. I like fishing, playing games, and swordsmanship. While I am no longer part of my clan, I still uphold my family's code of paying my debts and offering a hand to those in need.

Nothing I love more than a good drink except for swords. If you also like swords, you should reach out. Let's set up a time to spar. The practice swords in the gym are good enough for a bout.

My Future Plans

I plan to beat this game so I can return to Midgand. I still owe a companion a debt that I intend to pay and I have my own personal goal. I can't stay checked in here forever. If you feel the same way, reach out.

I plan to keep up on my training and learn the terrain of this resort. I'd like to meet some likeminded people who want to fight. While I prefer swords, you can fight however you want. Variety keeps a swordsman sharp.

Otherwise, I'm just looking to meet people. I don't mind being alone but prefer the company of others.

My Talents

Swordsmanship.

I've practiced my family's style since I was very young. I continue to practice it to this day despite it being as natural as breathing to me now. My clan specialized in either one long sword or two short. I chose to practice the latter and am comfortable using both hands. I've been working on expanding out from this... but I won't go into detail on that here.

I don't know what else. All I'm good for is cutting.

Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and Food

I don't read much. I've studied scrolls and books on battle tactics and training forms, if those count. I don't typically read for pleasure. I prefer more active kinds of entertainment. It's okay if you like books, though. You can tell me about them since I won't read them.

I don't know much about movies. Someone has offered to show me, so I'll come back to this one. As for music, I've always liked traditional music. The sound of the drums and flute are particularly nice. And who doesn't like a lovely singing voice?

I prefer drinks over snacks but if I have to pick a food: Candied Sweet Potatoes. I could eat buckets of those.

My Ideal Partner

I've never really thought about this before...

Someone strong. If you can kill me, that's even better.

Someone who will challenge me. Not that I dislike harmony! I've always been drawn to those that are different from me, or think differently. I like a challenge in general so I guess this isn't any different.

Someone who understands my path and won't try to change my mind. Someone... with their own path. Independence. Someone who understands the beauty of our paths crossing and then diverging once more. Perhaps they'll cross again.

Someone with a sense of responsibility and a work ethic. Or, at the very least, someone who doesn't mind mine. I have a goal and I won't stop until I reach it.

It's a bonus if you like to drink and if you also love swords.

PERSONALITY:

What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?

Often described as happy-go-lucky, Rokurou comes off as amicable and good-natured (and maybe a bit dumb, depending on the moment) straight away. Tales of Link coins it well: a freewheeling young swordsman who treats even angry Velvet with good cheer. He's almost always smiling and his reactions tend to be calm and collected, giving the initial impression that this guy is friendly and confident. And he is!

But Rokurou Rangetsu is a man that keeps his true nature on his sleeve(s). Like, literally.

Rokurou’s style of dress is directly indicative of his true nature. He’s a man that became a daemon after intense fear, loss, anger, and regret—the stain of which is clearly painted on the right half of his face in rough daemon blight and iconic red eye, while the left half of his face remains human. His clothes mirror this contrast: his right side armored, tight-fitting, and ready for war. His left softer, with a loose kimono sleeve draping his shoulder and arm with the pattern of birds flying into a sunset. With the kinder, brotherly side comes a rougher, more violent nature. Velvet’s had to knock some sense into him more than a time or two when his bloodlust gets the better of him.

Rokurou is a man of halves. Half human, half daemon. Half warrior, half brother. Though he's good of taking care of others and sensitive to their emotions, his reactions toward the unsavory and deplorable tend to be a muted smile and a shrug. Among the group (a squad of criminals) his sense of humor tends to be the most morbid—he'll laugh at a dumb pun and a macabre comment. He'll point out when things are particularly fucked up, yet seems perfectly fine with going with whatever it is unless it directly goes against his personal code. When faced with others' shady ass behavior his answer is usually, "I'm a daemon—who am I to judge?"

So, yes. He's easygoing and friendly, but those traits, while true, obscure a violent nature on first meet. He doesn't hide it, however, so you'll figure out that he's weird in short time.

How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?

Being the freewheeling and easygoing guy that he is, Rokurou's quite good at rolling with the punches and taking challenges head on. Hell, he actually relishes a good challenge, though usually prefers it to be one he can take on with a sword. Often times in canon he's point on keeping Velvet in check when she's triggered by her enemy or ushering the group when there's a strong monster nearby. Thanks to his emotions being dulled and his training, he's generally cool and collected when faced with a stressful situation (of course, this all goes out the window when it comes to his brother).

After all, he's already lived through some crazy shit—becoming a daemon after fucking up his own life by making terrible choices, scarlet nights where daemons flood the continent and kill everything in sight, dragons, escaping the highest security prison there is, going on a quest of vengeance with a chick that uses her daemon arm to eat people's souls, just to name a few.

When it comes to the pressure of dealing with his brother, in the first few run-ins he snaps. Violent, angry, quick to fight. Yelling at his companions to back off. Attacking said companions like a dog redirecting its anger. He's knocked out of this state with a good punch to the head, but when it comes to the few things that touch a nerve, he'll get violent. He gets better by the end of the game... but I'm taking him from earlier on for the fun of working out these things ICly! Love character development.

What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?

Rokurou considers not killing his brother the night of the scarlet moon three years prior to the start of the game to be his greatest regret. He doesn't regret becoming a daemon—actually, he's so much better as a daemon, human!Rokurou was shitty—he doesn't regret going to prison or becoming a criminal. He doesn't even regret the demise of their clan. But that night has haunted him for a long time, and even with emotions dulled down it's one of the few things that really gets to him. It was a night of utter humiliation for Rokurou that lead to such intense self-hatred, suicidal ideation, and despair that he became a daemon.

This regret is his main motivator. Shigure tells him to get stronger—so that's his goal in order to kill his brother. Rokurou states several times in canon that he will do almost anything to become stronger, and it only comes with a caveat because he won't do anything that would cause him to lose his sense of reason/self. He'll chase any challenge for the sake of getting stronger. He'll face any enemy. He'll feed his violent nature and be the bad guy. It's all for the sake of killing the ghost of his weak self and killing his brother; the sword he wears on his back is a physical reminder of this promise to himself. Needless to say, the impact is huge. Teasing at his brother at all is great psychological torture for him, hint hint.

INVENTORY: The most important item that would have been on his person would have been the longsword on his back. The sword that he describes as "his life" is the marker of his past mistakes and weakness. Inside the sheath is actually a broken sword—something he considers himself to also be—that his brother broke the scarlet night they fought. His proverbial "cross" to bear, this is something that he repaired later in the game to indicate self-improvement. At the current canonpoint, it's still broken and he'll be looking for it since all weapons are taken on arrival. Other items would be his short swords, also taken upon arrival. Items kept would be a handful of gald, his flask filled with booze, and the clothes/armor on his back. The longsword is 100% the most important and has huge significance to him.

POWERS

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Enhanced senses/Daemon abilities: As he explains to Velvet, once he turned into a daemon, Rokurou found all of his senses to be sharper than ever. Thanks daemon powers★! As a yaksha, which is the name in Berseria for war daemons, this is meant to send him into a thrall on the battlefield. I’ll estimate that they’re at least twice as sensitive/strong as a human’s normal senses, with touch and smell being among the strongest.

Endurance/Durability: Rokurou is much hardier than your average bear. Daemons have innate endurance for hard travel and durability in harsh weather or intense temperature. It doesn't bother them. Velvet is able to run around in a snowstorm in skimpy clothing, and Rokurou doesn't seem to mind running around sunny hot beaches in layers upon layers of armor and kimono. They also have higher pain tolerance, heal quicker, and just all around have better specs than most.

Swordsmanship/Dualwielding: A student of the Rangetsu style, Rokurou's trained in two kinds of styles: the longsword and two short swords. Even though he has studied both, in his quest to overcome his brother's mastery with one long sword, Rokurou's gone contrary and focused on mastering the short dual blades. Regardless, he's really skilled with both. Also with knives. Really, slicing stuff is his thing. As far as swordsmanship goes, he's pretty top notch but always endeavoring to better himself.

Artes: There are three kinds of artes: martial (base) artes, hidden artes, and mystic artes. They're fancy strikes that can include special skills or are rooted in a certain element. Martial artes are basic skills and wouldn't require any nerfing, think a normal strike or punch. In Rokurou’s case, all of his base artes are non-elemental, just your average dude using a sword with his own skill. On the flip side, all of his hidden artes have an elemental element (breaking down in JRPG, he needs to do a normal strike and then can trigger an elemental strike after like stacking on a ladder). Mystic artes are finishing blows.

NERFING: Hidden and mystic artes will be cut altogether. All senses will be less sharp—still better than average but there will be enough of a decline that he can feel it. He also won't have any of his weapons upon arrival which is a handicap to a swordsman. He's really going to be living off the charity of people who have a weakness for a hunk with a nice smile...

WEAKNESSES: Since he is a daemon with a lot of malevolence, I do play him as having a disadvantage against light/exorcist types (especially on crosscanon points). He's strong and hardy, but stab him in a vital and he's as vulnerable as anyone else. His brother is a weakness in almost every sense.

Hakagemachi was a city. A desolate, broken city, one teetering on an edge. A precipice.

It called souls to it. The youkai who loved that city latched onto spirits from other realms, hoping to draw in those who could help save their beloved city and restore it to its former glory. Rokurou was one such person, chosen by an oni named Akame. They agreed on many things: fighting the strong, drinking booze, living your best life ... but where they disagreed was sharing. Both wanted their own agency, and fought over supremacy for Rokurou's body, which didn't put them on the best terms with one another despite having so many similarities. Too similar. Rokurou already knew beforehand that he wouldn't like himself if he had a clone, and this only solidified it.

The city was filled with curiosities. Moments in time repeating themselves, the past coming to the present, shadows and echoes around every corner. Rokurou didn't question most of them—he killed youkai that crossed his path, worked together with newfound friends to battle natural elements going against them, and watched as the city that called them became more and more unhinged. A static man with dulled emotions, it didn't much bother him when he found the bodies of those newfound friends piling up, and the strategist in him understood that, as more and more time passed, they were losing this battle. The rains turned from water to blood. The goddesses screamed. They made wrong choices. They ate their friends ... not on purpose, but it happened when Mori, the local ramen shop owner, made a very bad decision to purchase questionable meat from some kids. Shit got real weird.

Throughout his journey in Hakagemachi, Rokurou didn't change much. In Berseria and in Hakagemachi, his path of finding himself somewhere between monster and man remained the same. In some ways, Hakagemachi humanized him. He found friends he genuinely cared about, and they're friends he'll keep an eye out for in Hell. However, it also hardened him—they went through battle after battle and they kept failing. In the end, there was only the shrill sound of chaos and bloodrain left to remember. Rokurou has a complex about failing, and though he didn't actually care about the fate of this city he had nothing to do with before being drawn there, so much of that reminded him of his past failures and what happened with the Rangetsu clan.

Akame's presence, when the oni was awake, was tumultuous. He often would be contrary for the sake of it—something Rokurou would do in return—and they weren't exactly friends. Akame would take over when Rokurou was asleep and get into trouble. Despite the oni's penchant for bad behavior, he did care for the city, and his constant urges to help pushed Rokurou into the thick of battle. In the end, though, it hadn't mattered; they weren't able to purify the land, and all he remembers is darkness. Right now, he's fully assuming that he was killed and is dead. Whether or not he is, though ... hmmmm. Maybe time will tell.

APPEARANCE:

One (1) daemon swordsman, at your service. He stands at 180cm, has a thicker/muscular build, and love wearing purple and orange. Under his fringe of bang his right eye is daemonic, swirled red and black, with black blight that marks the whole right half of his face and down the right half of his throat.

CONTRACT PAYMENT:

Rokurou's ultimate goal is to get stronger. So, his requests would be very simple: to be brought back to life, a ticket back to Midgand, and the means to get stronger. Throw in a really, really, really nice sword. He'll also request a 1:1 battle with the strongest person in Hell before he rolls on home, too.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?

Family is a loaded gun of a topic for Rokurou. Family was why he ruined his human life. Family is what drives him when he's a daemon. Family is what defines so much of what he is and why he's the way he is, be it in the past and now. Frankly, letting go of a lot the baggage he had in regards to his family is a huge step in finding himself and where he finally ends up post-game.

The Rangetsu were a strict clan where killing each other was just another tradition. Rokurou grew up the youngest of six, but it was his eldest brother, Ichirou, whose shadow he stood in the most. Ichirou killed their mother, which was how he inherited the title of "Shigure"—an act Rokurou never felt right with, put him at odds with his brother. Not because he had killed their mother, but because he had done it to test his own strength and not because he actually wanted to become the head of the clan. The newly minted Shigure was also a genius; whatever he he touched, he mastered. Rokurou did not have the blessed touch of genius and had to work hard at everything he did. More and more, his brother became a sore spot for him. He was envious. He was bitter. He wanted so badly to become Shigure's equal, but no matter what he tried, he could never match up.

At the end they were the only two brothers alive and they faced each other under the scarlet moon. Simply put: Shigure thoroughly kicked his ass. Rokurou fell into despair, wanted to kill himself, was thrown into jail for failing to kill his brother, ended up drowning in malevolence, and became a daemon. After becoming a daemon and joining the main party, Rokurou is bent on revenge. He joins Velvet, a little because he thinks she's interesting, but mostly because their interests align. Once again, he focuses on his brother. Everything is about his brother. Killing his brother. He straight up tortures a guard who mentions having seen his brother for information on the elder Rangetsu's whereabouts.

But their relationship is complex. When their old lord insults Shigure, Rokurou kills him. He claims it's because he always wanted to do so, but he's very much of the mind that Shigure is his to hate and insult, and no one else's. The Rangetsu are very insular; he's the only one who can kill his brother. This is a notion bred into them at birth, along with ideals such as "might is right" and "pay your debts". In other voice lines we learn that Rokurou's mother was strict while she was alive, and she never praised him. She was a brutal woman who raised her sons to be brutal as well. That was the way of their clan. It was great. So great.

Despite the Rangetsu having a harsh upbringing and a very orange and blue mentality, Rokurou often speaks positively about his clan and its bloody history. The Rangetsu are fucked up, notoriously so, but he's also quite proud of his heritage. Since the Rangetsu were exorcists and he's now a daemon he can never inherit the title of Shigure, but once upon a time that's what he wanted more than anything. Seriously, don't insult his family. He can do it, but you can't. Rokurou is a man of contrasts and this is just one of 'em!

As for who he considers his family ... as cute as found family tropes are, his family is the Rangetsu clan. That will never change. It's his blood, his roots, and so much of what he knows and believes will always come back to them. Even as he grows as a person and finds his own way to live, blood is blood.

What are your greatest regrets, if you have any? What would you have done differently?

Leading in from the last question where I definitely wrote too much ... Rokurou considers not killing his brother that night to be his greatest regret. He doesn't regret becoming a daemon—actually, he's so much better as a daemon, human!Rokurou was a shit—and he doesn't even regret going to prison or becoming a criminal. Hell, he doesn't even regret the demise of the Rangetsu clan. But that night has haunted him for a long time, and from the point I'm taking from it still haunts him. How easily Shigure swat him down, like a gnat. His brother didn't even break a sweat while Rokurou was practically frothing by the end of it. All of the lies, the tricks, the gambits ... and then not being able to so much as land a scratch on the man. It was a night of utter humiliation for Rokurou, so much so that he drowned in self-hatred and malevolence and became a daemon.

Despite all of that, Rokurou often claims that he wouldn't change anything. He'd still try to kill his brother. If he could go back and change everything he did, he wouldn't. What happened, happened. He can only continue walking forward and fight his brother again... only, he'd like to, you know, win this time? Which is why he comes out of jail three years later totally ready to take his revenge. That said, because becoming a daemon dulled most of his emotions, he's much more chill until actually facing his brother. Over time, he actually comes to understand and respect his brother more ... and from where I've taken him, from before their final battle, he's lost a lot of the childish bitterness and instead respects his brother as an opponent.

What is your favorite diversion? Hobbies, indulgences, vices? Would you put off important things for that diversion, or would you be more strict about how you spend your time and/or money?

Battles and drinking, battles and drinking. Rokurou loves swordsmanship. He trains every single day, and he's always thinking of new ways to challenge and improve himself with a blade. He looooveessss swords so fucking much; he loves considering their construction, their history, their specs, what they're made of, cleaning them, maintaining them, adding accessories ... and he loves fighting with them. Cutting is pretty much the only thing he's good for! Naturally, this is extremely important to him. He will throw away most other important things when he hears about a promising sword or meets someone who would be a thrilling match in battle. His subquests mostly involve sorts and battles. If he could, he would funnel almost all of his money into swords and practicing the blade.

I say almost because he also really loves to drink. When he isn't training or getting into fights, he's drinking. He carries a flask with him and one of his world idles has him just casually drinking straight out of it. There's nothing like a good drink after a good fight—that would be his perfect night, in fact. So, in Rokurou's dream world, let's say about 25% of his money would go to alcohol and 75% would go to battle/swords. As long as he has these things, he's a happy camper.

An enemy of your faction has asked for a meeting, proposing a truce of sorts to deal with a greater threat. On one hand, there is indeed a threat at hand, but on the other, this person double-crossing you is just as likely an outcome. Do you agree to the meeting? Do you trust them?

This sounds exactly likes a Tales plotline!!! How fun.

For Rokurou in particular, yeah, he would work with an enemy if they had a greater threat to work against or some other ends that justified the means. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right? He's surprisingly good at putting aside differences (when it isn't Shigure) for the sake of getting a job done. Hell, the whole premise of the ToB group is that they're a bunch of criminals banding together to serve their own agendas. Magilou, another member of the group, totally rats them out to their enemies early on in the game when she's captured—something both Rokurou and Velvet expect 100%. And when she comes back she more or less goes "whoops!" and they continue traveling together again. They're not bothered by it because it's not like any of them really trusted any of the others to begin with.

Rokurou, too, is a guy who could have a drink with you and then kill you ten minutes later. Killing is just so normal to him that half the time when he says "it isn't personal" it really isn't—in the Rangetsu clan, killing was normal, so the quick flip comes naturally. So, he can get along with an enemy for the sake of a goal and then switch back into kill-mode after they're finished, no problemo. In fact, he's the one you probably have to watch. He's fond of using loopholes to wiggle around in contracts and agreements, and he'll use any excuse to do what he wants.

And if the meeting goes belly-up right away? He'd be happy about it anyway. He's always looking for a good battle, and if meeting up with an enemy he already wanted to kill comes with that, he'd be satisfied as a clam.... in the ocean.... because they're satisfied there. Really, for him, it's just a win/win situation.

It tends not to bother them. Velvet is able to run around in a snowstorm in skimpy clothing, and Rokurou doesn't seem to mind running around sunny hot beaches in layers upon layers of armor and kimono. They also have higher pain tolerance, heal quicker, and just all around have better specs than your average bear. For Jigoku-cho some of this will be toned down, with a slowed healing rate and less general endurance due to suppression upon entrance to the city.

• Swordsmanship/Dual-wielding: A student of the Rangetsu style, which focuses on two kinds of styles: the longsword and two short swords. Rokurou's studied both, but in his quest to overcome his brother and his mastery with one long sword, Rokurou's gone the other way and focused on mastering the dual blades. Regardless, he's really skilled with both. Also with knives. Really, slicing stuff is his thing. As far as swordsmanship goes, he's pretty top notch but always endeavoring to better himself. For Jigoku-cho I'll have him keep his martial skill, but since his swords aren't coming along for the ride, he's going to be one unhappy swordsman. He's also a sword connoisseur, so some average-priced swords found in normal shops aren't going to be enough for him.

• Artes: There are three kinds of artes: martial (base) artes, hidden artes, and mystic artes. They're essentially fancy attacks that can include special skills or are rooted in a certain element. Martial artes are basic skills and wouldn't require any nerfing. In Rokurou’s case specifically, all of his base artes are non-elemental, so think of your average dude using a sword. On the flip side, all of his hidden artes have an elemental element to them. Mystic artes are the most powerful, and typically a finishing blow kind of attack. For Jigoku-cho both hidden artes and mystic artes would be suppressed upon entering the city.

• Slumscape specific: Oni. In Slumscape, all souls who were gathered by the city had a youkai attached to them. Rokurou was connected to a mask/oni named Akame, a likewise battlehungry but much more cunning spirit. Right now, Akame will be in a deep sleep and unresponsive. Not sure if I plan to ever bring him around in this game so I'll just tuck him into a corner for safekeeping.

SUITABILITY:

A fugitive daemon samurai that's trying to find his identity between being a daemon and a swordsman? You're begging to have this guy around. 😈

Tales of Berseria is one of the edgier Tales titles, where most of the main party is a criminal in some form or another. They burn down houses, they steal, they kill things, they fight the police, they hang out with pirates, they're out for revenge. Rokurou in particular is not the greatest guy! He has a good-natured personality now, but in the past his bad attitude and jealousy basically ruined his (human) life. Even now, while having mellowed out some re: the jealousy and inferiority complex, he loves to fight and he likes to kill! He really doesn't care about committing crimes, enjoys following orders, and as long as he gets to do what he wants it doesn't really matter how moral he is when doing it.

He's also pretty unflappable in general. Killing? Sure. Sex? Why not. Crime? Please. Even if he wasn't a daemon, the Rangetsu clan was notorious for killing those who wandered onto their lands and within their own ranks. He's also very familiar with serving a lord/master, because his clan served under a lord before it met its end (which was... at least 85% his fault).

Rokurou will do just about anything to get stronger. So, whatever his boss here wants? They're going to get.

Rokurou would feel right at home in the Shuten Clan—at least, he'd really like it there. For a guy who loves battling the strong and getting stronger himself, the general vibe of Shuten is right up his alley. However, other than the above checks, Rokurou also aligns with most of the core values of the Shuten clan. Despite becoming a daemon, he still believes in his family's code of bushido. Protecting those that can't protect themselves, commitment to your allies, and always repaying your debts are among the top. Might makes right is also very much in line with the reasoning of the Rangetsu clan; one of their traditions included killing the current leader to inherit the role of head of the clan.

Timtams! You know, at first glance I didn't think he'd be the greatest Tamamo, but after thinking about it ... he actually does gel with a lot of the ideals? He might be brawn over brain, but he's actually quite clever. He's very good at laying traps and tends to think a lot about execution (battle, getting his paws on something, etc) despite his general fratboy energy. Clever ... but stupid. He's the dog that chases the squirrel and is clever enough to catch it ... but then has no idea what to do once he has said feral squirrel in his mouth. And, to an extent, he also believes in freedom—he goes after what he wants. His main development in the game is finding his true self somewhere between his identity as a daemon and identity as a swordsman.

God, Rokurou hilariously does not care about intelligence or knowledge LMAO. Within the party dynamics, he's usually the one asking questions because he just doesn't know anything outside of battle, battle tactics, and what alcohol goes best with which food. I'm slightly ashamed (of him and his .05 braincell) to admit that there's even a skit where he's amazed that the world is round, and every character is appalled that he didn't already know that. He also thinks a "paradox" is actually "pair of dogs" and that the idiom involves two dogs battling each other. He isn't pious or doesn't really go for asceticism. He does really resonate with being an underdog, though, and would appreciate the idea behind the creation of the alliance and what they're doing.

He'd gel better with the Enma than the Sutoku, though this would still be a bit of a stretch for him. Thankfully they don't actually care about justice so much, and Rokurou could get down with the order part of things. He already served a lord whose orders were absolute, and whose orders he executed without so much as a word. Yes, he did kind of kill that lord later, but he did so through a loophole ... which technically upheld the contract between them. So, he isn't a traitor, and any mischief he would do would be by the book ... because he's clever and good at figuring that kind of thing out. He's a criminal so being part of the "police" would definitely be weird to him, but he'd also just roll with it and have fun fucking other people's shit up by the book.

It's all pretty great. Thanks daemon powers! ★ As a yaksha, otherwise known as war daemon, this is meant to send him into a thrall on the battlefield. I’ll estimate that they’re at least twice as sensitive/strong as a human’s normal senses, with touch and smell being among the strongest. He’s also gotten stronger as a daemon, though a lot of that does have to do to his own daily efforts.

• Endurance/Durability. On that note, Rokurou is much hardier than your average human. Daemons have innate endurance for hard travel and durability in harsh weather and intense temperature. Ohhh boy, this is a fun one. Rokurou, in his human life, had way too many negative emotions. The biggest culprits would be pride, envy, and a bad inferiority complex. Seriously—human Rokurou was a dick.

People generally don't turn into daemons unless there’s a lot of darkness in their heart. Rokurou's change stemmed from deep animosity and envy toward his eldest brother and the sick desperation to finally defeat him. On that same scarlet night that Velvet was betrayed, Rokurou met the most humiliating defeat at his brother's hands and fell into despair. Depression from realizing that, even after years of training, he was still nothing but a light workout to Shigure. All of his effort was for nothing. That all the planning, lies, and deceit he engaged in to fish for a reason to attack Shigure hadn’t mattered; Rokurou was still the same weak little boy in his brother's eyes, barely even a challenge let alone a threat. If that much—after a battle that left Rokurou crying, shaken, and shattered, Shigure hadn’t even broken into a sweat.

The dark feelings burned hot in his chest and, shortly after, they boiled over and Rokurou was overcome with daemonblight as he lay rotting in prison. A situation he had brought himself into all on his own—thanks to all of his lies, need for validation, desperation to beat Shigure, and stark realization of his own pathetic cowardice landed him at that lowest point. The fault was one hundred percent his, and all of those sick, disgusting feelings knotted up up up until they simply died along with his humanity.

Once he becomes a demon, most of his lingering bitterness and hatred simmer away. There are elements of it that show up when he meets Shigure again, but by the time he faces his brother in their final battle … instead of snapping and rushing headfirst into attacking, Rokurou shares a drink with the man. By the end of the game he seems to have moved on from a lot of it, but it's still a huge part of his past.

How strongly do they feel about the negative subject matter, on the scale of one to ten?:

Once upon a time, just meeting his brother would hike him to an instant ten. That mix of pride and envy prompted him to do some really terrible things in order to give himself an advantage in fighting Shigure when he was human (not to mention, he had to do it in a way that validated the attack, so he spread lies about his brother to boot). Come postgame, he's made peace with his brother, finding his own path as a swordsman, the fact that he'll never be the head of the Rangetsu clan, and his own talents as a swordsman.

He can look back now and realize that a lot of what he did was stupid as hell, though when asked about it, he refuses to have any regrets. So that instant ten has dropped to about maybe a three; I think he'll always strive to be better, but he's accepted that Shigure was just the better one between them, period stop.

... Of course, this would still be super fun to play with, given the chance.

What is their greatest virtue?:

Commitment. Rokurou Rangetsu always pays his debts, no matter how much the other person may not care about it!

Eizen mentions that even though Rokurou's become a daemon, a lot of his old notions and beliefs probably haven't gone away. While Rokurou does a lot of bad stuff (with the Berseria crew and without), he ultimately still follows his family's code of bushido. It's suggested that while Rokurou's a lot like how he used to be when he was human, there's a certain level of removal that comes with being a daemon. He will pay his debts and be utterly devoted while doing so. He'll protect the weak without needing to be asked. Commitment is just the straight up Rangetsu way, and he considers himself to be a man of commitment, whether it's to those ideals of protecting or applying himself to a goal. Who else wound spend all day swinging a sword? And then continue all night swinging a sword, just to get stronger? Not me.

He's a guy that goes after what he wants and keeps at it. While he can be morally questionable at the best of times, applying himself or dedicating himself to something is definitely one of his better traits.

How aware are they of their virtue, on a scale from one to ten?:

Eight? Nine? Commitment is more or less a motto for him at this point, and the family code and bushido matter to him even when he's a crusty evil daemon. He pledges his help to Velvet at the beginning of the game when she helps bust him out of prison, despite how she really doesn't care. He's well aware of when he owes someone and he's strict with himself about paying that back somehow. If someone helps him, it just matters to give it back.

I don't say a ten, however, because he isn't above using loopholes to justify doing something else if he wants. When he runs into his old master, the man insults him, and though he'd previously pledged to serve him Rokurou ends up killing him instead. The crew naturally calls him out on this shit, and Rokurou just shrugs and explains that the promise to serve Count Capalus had been made when he was human, and since he's a daemon now, it doesn't count anymore. And then someone calls him out on just wanting to kill the guy (which is true).

BACKGROUND:

Rokurou’s time in Lagunbiru was littered with trying to fill out his bingo card to get back to his planet and companions, forging friendships with unlikely people, and clashing blades with talented swordsmen of other worlds. While his core principles haven’t changed in the slightest, his experiences on the ship opened his eyes to what’s beyond his world and its problems.

Typically a slice-of-life station ruled by sex and mysterious bingo, Rokurou engaged in thrilling battles during his free time that only encouraged his love of the blade and living the life of a swordsman. He also grew accustomed to people passing through; many of those friendships ended in the wind, since those men vanished without a trace or warning. Rokurou was already living such a lifestyle, knowing all things are ephemeral, but this really hammered the thought home—that the life of a swordsman is fleeting, and that the goal is to enjoy the now. The moment of clashing blades, or sharing a drink before or after a match, is to be relished.

I touch a little more on how the station influenced his thoughts and personality down in the personality section, but overall, more than changing him at his core, the station put him through experiences that he never thought possible. Creatures coming and attacking people he’s come to care about. The restlessness of being somewhere truly chaining him down. The frustration of being unable to return to Velvet’s side and repay his debt. He’s managed to preserve through everything that went down, and turned out for the better because of it.

PERSONALITY:

Rokurou Rangetsu is a man that keeps his nature on his sleeve(s), quite literally.

Often described as happy-go-lucky, Rokurou is, on the regular, amicable and good-natured. Tales of Link coins it well: A freewheeling young swordsman who treats even angry Velvet with good cheer. Contracting daemonblight hasn't dampened his spirits; he uses it to empower his familial sword artes. He's nearly always smiling and his reactions tend to be calm and collected. He takes even the strangest moments in stride—during a hot springs scene where everyone switches bodies, Rokurou is incredibly relaxed about it, outside of a few jokes.

With that in mind, he does comment that while his physical senses have heightened since contracting daemonblight, some of his human emotions have ... dulled. His reactions toward the unsavory and deplorable tend to be muted into a smile and a shrug. Among the group, his sense of humor tends to be the most morbid. He'll point out when things are particularly fucked up, yet seems perfectly fine with going with whatever it is unless it directly goes against his personal code of morals. When faced with others' questionable behavior his answer is usually, "I'm a daemon—who am I to judge?"

A daemon indeed, just like the main heroine Velvet (which makes him one of the members of their criminal party that relates to her the most), Rokurou is one that pulls Velvet back when she sees Artorius for the first time after her stint in prison. When she’s off kilter he keeps her balanced, and she offers the same for him in kind when the coin’s flipped—despite how easygoing he tends to be, there are a handful of things that can make Rokurou’s switch flip.

Which is what I mean by ‘he wears his nature on his sleeve(s)’. Rokurou’s style of dress is directly indicative of his nature, his story arc, and his personality. He’s a man that became a daemon after intense fear, loss, anger, and regret—the stain of that is clearly painted on the right half of his face in rough demon skin and iconic red eye, while the left half of his face remains human. His clothes mirror this contrast, with his right side armored, tightfitting, and ready for war. His left softer, with a loose haori sleeve draping his shoulder and arm, with the pattern of birds flying into a peaceful sunset embroidered into its weave. With the kinder, brotherly side comes a rougher, more violent edge that comes out when he’s faced with an exciting challenge, or something he’s perceived to be his prey. Velvet’s had to knock some sense into him more than a time or two when his bloodlust starts to get the better of him.

Eizen mentions that even though Rokurou's become a daemon, a lot of his old notions and beliefs probably haven't gone away. While Rokurou does a lot of bad stuff ( with the Berseria crew and without ), he ultimately still follows his family's code of bushido. He's nurturing, considering his affection for Laphicet when the crew picks him up, and how he tries to encourage Velvet to make connections. Of the crew he's the most likely to be called brotherly.

Just the same, he’s also the most casual about killing. Much of his blue and orange sense of morality comes from his origins with the Rangetsu clan, his family, who were known for being even more terrifying than the daemons they hunted off their lands. A Rangetsu’s sense of right and wrong is very different from the usual person’s, considering they’re a clan with a tradition of killing its head to take up the mantle, so that already put him into the questionable morals club.

Rokurou considers himself a workingman and, even with his current mercenary-like attitude, holds himself to the same code he did when he was human. Even honor is still a thing, despite having been completely disgraced and lost everything he had, which lead to his ending up in prison at the start of the game. All by his own hand, due to pride, jealousy, and a bad inferiority complex. Seriously—human Rokurou was a dick.

Changing into a daemon, for Rokurou, actually ends up making him a better person. An overarching theme in Berseria is how humans are perfectly capable of great evil, and how the monsters can be good despite their supposedly wicked nature. Rokurou is a case for both sides of this: his human past is conniving, selfish, and jealous. He lies for the sake of throwing Shigure under the bus and getting permission from their lord to take him down. As a daemon, Rokurou begins to walk a path less lined with violent emotions and selfishness, instead finding his way to owning his personal identity as a swordsman. He makes peace with who he is and what he is in a way he never could when he was human. He’s the only one, at the end of the game, who stays a daemon after the world is purified. He jokes it’s because his sins are too great, which they very well might be, but becoming a daemon changed him for the better.

After Shigure's finally struck down Rokurou even begins come clean as to why he had been ordered to execute Shigure—his own lies to their lord that Shigure was planning a coup. Shigure waves him off, saying that he'd have left anyway; he didn't want to be a chained dog. He also gives Rokurou words some final words of advice: "Idiot … stop worrying about the little things. Rejoice when your blade finds its mark, seethe when it doesn't, die when one finds you. That's all there is to it. The way of the sword is a simple one, that's what makes it so much fun." That's something Rokurou takes, seeming to finally understand, nodding his head before looking away.

Rokurou’s a case of a man digging himself back up from the ground. He matures throughout the game, changing from a man that hides and leans away from his flaws to accepting and owning them. He finds his place as both a man, a daemon, and, above all, as a swordsman. Becoming a daemon gives him freedom to find himself, to discover what truly matters, and to make connections with people in a way he never would have before.

As for changes within Lagunbiru—

There are the obvious. Having spent time in space already, caught in the web of strange flashing lights, rich aliens, and being away from home, Rokurou’s already learned how to use most technology (texting, video chatting, etc). He isn’t going to be completely shocked about ending up somewhere else in space. His experience on Lagunbiru station has left him even number to sex than he was before; the prospect of moonlancing for money isn’t going to shock him either, though he is going to get the impression that everyone in space needs to get laid to make some coin.

He’s ever serious about mastering the sword, still training every day and always looking for a challenge. Now that he’s interacted with a wider range of swordsmen from different worlds, he’s less inclined to outright murder his prey/opponents, instead taking sparring as a means to better himself and build interesting relationships. Farther along on his character arc of finding his way as a swordsman through this, coming to terms with who he is now, and what matters to him. On that note—many of his more violent urges ended up channeled through sex instead of murder, so that’s a thing.

At the core, Rokurou hasn’t changed much. He’s still fully intent on repaying his debt to Velvet and fighting to the end with her. His time on Lagunbiru station, however, has caused him to consider his journey, past and future, with a more critical and, because of distance, clearer eye. The canon point I took him from at the time was before he achieved his goal of killing Shigure, and the separation from direct pursuit, while never killing his desire, had him putting the new things he cared about in relation to that goal.

Now that Rokurou’s succeeded in that goal, having killed Shigure through the use of three swords, and coming to terms with the fact that his brother was still the better swordsman in the end … he’s happy with his new goal in finding someone who will hate him that much, and come to kill him with a vengeance. He’s on task assisting Velvet with her goal, repaying his debt and seeing her quest for revenge through until the end.

His time in Lagunbiru will be spotty, to avoid too much character recognition and the whole exhausting “I used to know you” song and dance. He’ll remember some important moments crisply, particularly impactful moments, but passing text threads with characters he sort of knew will, as a general rule, be hazy.

• Swordsmanship/Dual wielding. A student of the Rangetsu style, which focuses on two kinds of styles—the longsword, and two short swords. Rokurou's studied both, but in his quest to overcome his brother and his mastery with one long sword, Rokurou's gone after mastering the dual blades. Regardless, he's really skilled with both. And knives. Really, slicing stuff is his thing. As far as swordsmanship goes, he's pretty top notch.

• Artes. There are three kinds: martial (base) artes, hidden artes, and mystic artes. They're basically fancy attacks that can include elements, special skills, or are rooted in a certain element. Fancy moves with his fancy swords. Martial artes are basic skills and wouldn't require any nerfing. The same goes for his hidden artes, mostly, though I'd say they'd be nerfed enough not to cause any major destruction. In Rokurou’s case specifically, all of his base artes are non-elemental, so think of your average dude using a sword. All of his hidden artes, however, are elemental, and his affinitity tends to be earth. Mystic artes are the most powerful, more or less, and he won't be able to use his in game.

PHYSICAL CONTACT

✓ — Hugs, shoulder touching, head pats, cuddling... it's all good. Rokurou's physical with the people he likes and often initiates contact himself. The people you love ... are furniture. Blanket permission to manhandle as you please. This also covers less affectionate gestures like pinching, punching, smacking, anything generally tame on the negative end if it's serious. If it's in the name of idiot slapstick, I basically have no limits.

PHYSICAL CONTACT ft. INTIMACY

✓ — He'll be surprised at a random ass grab or someone kissing him first, but gooo for it. He's often the one initiating so someone else going for it first is attractive. Response will depend upon the CR and general chemistry, but on an OOC level I'm giving a double thumbs up. Slap his dummy thicc ass, you know you want to. He won't react violently even if it isn't reciprocated.

FLIRTING

✓ — Flirt away! Anything easygoing and light he's likely to go along with. He's good at shallow, fun interactions ... not so good when things start to get more real. But yeah, tell him he's pretty. It'll make his day.

FIGHTING

✓ — 100% yes. Rokurou is a fight nut, with one of his main interests being to challenge strong opponents. If your character is looking for a fight he'll absolutely take them up on it; if your character is strong he might follow them around until they agree to fight. I do like to write fight threads but if they aren't your thing, fading to black or handwaving the encounter is totally cool. We can also handwave recurring spars if your character is also a fight nut.

When it comes to fights I try to keep things even. Rokurou's strong but not infallible, I'm all for him getting beaten-up and bloody. All about that give and take, baybee. For outcomes, let's discuss. I'm totally cool with him losing spars, though you might end up with a shadow bent on battle vengeance for....ever. Enjoy that.

Damage-wise, let's avoid anything hugely permanent (excluding scars) unless otherwise discussed.

KILLING

? — Maybe with discussion. Gotta die on the battlefield with a sword in his chest like a real Rangetsu. Not looking for a permanent death/drop plot ATM.

SHIPPING

✓ — Why ... would you want him ...

I'm a multishipper and into it if the chemistry is right. Rokurou's easygoing when it comes to anything casual and fun, but actual Feelings are a likely a long slowburn. Fair warning: he's a sword-obsessed knucklehead manchild with a weird family background, so good luck with that.

SMUT

✓ — Open to any variation of M/* and 16+. Older characters with the mental capacity of children and 1000+ characters who look 8 years old are no-gos.

I prefer to write out smut threads, so in general I'm not interested in fade to black unless we're wrapping up a scene. Longer tags that have a blend of meta and action are highly preferred; I have a difficult time writing smut ECATS style. It doesn't need to be an essay, but I like having something to work off of. POWERS (INCOMING)

✓ — Feel free to use yours on him. Has no mental protections against mind reading or emotional manipulation. HMU for his thoughts and I'll let you know what your character can read/sense. I'm also cool with thief characters robbing him, ninja characters ninjaing around him, magicians doing magic ... basically, your characters' abilities are cool and you should use them! We can chat if anything serious pops up.

POWERS (OUTGOING)

✓ — If your character can sense an aura they are free to notice how his is an ominous dark purple. It's thick, heavy, feels like animosity or malevolence, and seems to be heavily entrenched in some kind of darkness/bad energy. It's said that daemons first came around as part of a curse on humanity, so supernaturally inclined characters can glean some wrongness from him. At the end of the game he's the only one that can't be purified by the sacred flame—Ro jokes that his sins are too great—so I'll go ahead and say his aura can be really oppressive to those that are sensitive given how deeply entrenched he is in malevolence.

Characters are also welcome to guess that he's a daemon/demon if that's something they can do/aligned with canon abilities. No worries if they can't though since it's something he has no problem announcing himself.

OOC

AVAILABILITY

✓ — EST tagger, mostly nights and weekends. Speed varies between 1-5 days. Open to boomeranging if we discuss and set aside a time for it. Network threads usually faster than logs.

I'm a huge backtagger and basically rely on this. If you're looking for someone who can finish a thread within a few days, I'm probably not the best match for you.

THREADJACKING

✓ — Network tags that aren't private are free game for both IC stalking/gleaning knowledge and jumping into. Logs require some discussion; I'm open to characters stalking/overhearing or tagging into public meetups but let's talk first.

4TH WALL

✓ — Let's avoid the "you're from a video game" route. 4th walling real life/memes/meta/anything funny, etc, is hilarious, go for it.

GODMODDING

? — To an extent. A-okay for moving threads along where it fits in the flow of a thread, let's avoid it for Rokurou's outright actions or feelings on a subject.

PLOTTING PREFERENCES

My general preference is to figure out starting details and then let the thread/CR build organically from there. I work best with an overall mood in mind with some vague points we'd like to reach, with the rest of it being improv based on how the thread rolls. I'm not a heavy planner, and sometimes like to just jump in feet first without working anything out at all for shits and giggles.

I've found that some of the best CR I've gotten in the past has been completely unexpected! In that vein, if you ever want to just throw yourself at me without warning, doooo it.

TAG STYLE & PREFS

Brackets, meatier tags, and a blend of meta and action. I don't expect an essay but I'm not an ECATS tagger; I usually have the most difficulty responding to one-liner tags. I don't push longer tags for the sake of length—whatever works for the moment/scene is great—but I really enjoy description and characters' inner thoughts.

FLAGS

Assuming it suits the mood/thread, I really enjoy writing about heavier subjects. This includes (but is not limited to): violence, blood, gore, cruelty, torture, weapons, wounds, complicated family history, dubcon, fucked up family dynamics, fucked up and unhealthy CR dynamics in general. HOWEVER, I will never spring this on you without warning, and if it comes up in a thread I will include a CW. None of this will come up in light-hearted, easygoing threads. If you want to delve deeper and are into it, though.... opens arms.
